A dollar a day diet????

Hmmm....so I visited Trader Joe's today to try and figure out what we would need to buy ahead of time for our road trip. Wow, I thought...it would be easy trying to shop on a dollar-a-day food diet, but it isn't. Oh what to purchase? Trail mix, dried fruit, protein bars, fruit, popcorn...so many snack items, but I'm not sure how to make it a dollar-a-day! Is that even possible? We even thought that maybe we would go on the Hallelujah diet while we were gone and live off of fruit and veggies...is that even possible on a dollar-a-day? We welcome any ideas of cheap and healthy food to purchase for the big trip. I said that it would be completely possible to live off our parameters if I stay stressed the whole trip as I don't eat when I am stressed, but Lynda is the opposite so that won't work either. I'm kinda worried we'll just have to break down and actually buy food...imagine that!

  1. Wow!! Sounds like so much fun!! The only way I see you eating for a dollar-a-day is to only shop at the Dollar Tree or any other dollar store/sale...good luck!!!! Totally with you in spirit!

  2. Hellooooo my fellow friend!! What an exciting trip. Our family did something like that last summer. We were only gone for 17 days though.

I am NO help for a dollar a day diet. There were 6 of us so you can only imagine the amount of money we spent on food. 5 boys yeah go ahead and take a guess. Okay maybe not.

I'm so glad your blogging about your trip. It will be another great blog for me to stalk!!

    Happy journeys and adventures.

    Praying for you and Lew,
    Christine

  3. I have three...thoughts...though this isn't my department really.
1-granola bars are awesome. Non name brand ones are sometimes as cheap as 18 cents per bar.
2-if you don't mind older food, consider locating a store that sells food a few days passed the shelf life date at a greatly reduced cost. We used to have one in chino where you could buy a candy bar a few days passed the date for a nickel. I don't know where any other such stores are located, but it's worth a try!
3-dried ramen is pretty good:) And, incredibly cheap!
    Hope ya'll have fun:)

  4. Food is a good thing. You should eat the healthy stuff and not worry about it being $1/day. Plus, I don't know about you, but I am never very hungry while road-tripping, so I would imagine that it would all wash out to be $1/day anyhow.
Look for a warehouse-discount place that sells dented cans and the like.
